The Upper Paleolithic of Eastern Central Europe

Status: In progress
Project leaders:

Eastern Central Europe is a fascinating region to study human societies in the changing climates and environments of the last ice age. A long research history going back to the end of the 19th century has uncovered many important archaeological sites and key-fossils of late Neanderthals and early modern humans.

Focus of research concerns:

  • Radiocarbon dating of ‘old excavated’ sites
  • Analysis of settlement structure
  • Occupation history especially in response to the “LGM”
  • Interactions of land use strategies and technological change

Current project:

Sieving residues from the Late Aurignacian of Breitenbach (Germany) (project leader: dr. O. Jöris, RGZM, Germany)
